Tunneling though Dirt and Stone

Post by laner275 »

Picture a mountain, a really BIG mountain, with an unforgiving maze of cliffs. Now, Picture taking a Pick axe, and your kin, And tunneling through the mountain, avoiding the cliffs. Now picture a home, set up inside that cavern, or even a village, You could implement Tunneling in so many ways. Travel, or a city with impeccable defense. I would love to have something like this. Of course, this would have some effects on the gameplay, Dirt Boxes could be built in the mountain, since plants could not grow. you could find cave bulbs and other items, such as certain herbs that grow, which could either help or make ill your character. Tunnels would have no light, like a cave or mine. And would carry slightly less Cavebulbs as caves, some would have none. Some might have alittle iron or tin, but most wouldn't. It's a good idea.

this seems pretty cool. i like it, and would personally love to have my own underground city. Possibly make it to where you can connect mines and caves to your cavern as well.
speaking of underground, i would like to see some kind of glowing fungus that randomly grows in caves to give off some ambient light (blue or green in color)
+1 to OP

dammit your right. at least with the current system.
one more reason we need a new system of...everything
explanation for anyone with less than 2 brain cells:
right now, walls are pretty much annoyances. J&L have been working on it and have had breakthroughs. tunneling just gives [insert favorite vulgarity here] another way to get inside your wall, and one they can do from a whole different super-grid. but wait! that would take forever and no one would be willing to dig a tunnel for that long, right? wrong. the [insert favorite vulgarity here] do not care, and some will just macro the entire tunnel so they don't have to do anything. end explanation.

Walls inside tunnels. :|

You would need some sort of support if you made it big enough for a city anyway.

I'd love something like this if it meant digging down into the 'cave' layer (mines probably shouldn't effect this at all perhaps they can be considered as if they were a layer lower than that ; Although I know rightnow they're more like houses in their 'own dimension' ; since they're so big and don't run into each other).

It would be very nice to be able to have it a as a 'second layer' there should be many penalties for doing so however.

(A new type of wall that you have to dig this 'trench' for first and then put it under would be neat.

Also not being able to go beyond rivers/lakes would also be neat, not even a 'flood' option, just no ability to go under them.

It seems like a good idea, but is probably best brought up at a later date after things change to favor it. (If they do)

Well, Picture you do have a city in a mountain. What happens when Greifers stumble upon an entrance. Wouldn't you want wall surrounding it?
EDIT:

True. But I envisioned that it would take wood (for ladders) and maybe a spade(use a pick on dirt?) to dig, And that palisade and brick walls can't be dug under, but Fences can. It also make sense to make it where if a home had a basement, you might accidentally bump into it, And unless you had a pick, trespassing (if claimed), And Vandalism (if claimed) You could break into the basement.

No, I mean the invaders would dig tunnels under walls get into towns. Which kinda defeats the point of having walls at all.

I kinda like the idea of invaders getting into towns through tunnels, but potjeh might be right. Since they can just start building quite a bit away from a town you would never even be able to spot them, unless some kind of detection system would be implemented, such as you feeling the earth shaking from time to time :)

true plus the system would not currently work anyways as it would require a whole new layer of land under ground where each tile is attached to corresponding one above not something the devs have and seeing as of late that all mines and cave size wise are not correct base to the world this would require a major overhaul of the currant map not something going to happen plus its to greifer friendly in to many ways and would make walls point less to build if they could just go under them
