Re: I thought of a new skill....
What about earthquakes? One day, suddenly all structures topple over and there is a huge cliff splitting an area in half and draining any water that was there.

No thanks, would need something better than that.

Make Lock Making and Lock Picking dependent on separate stats/attributes. Say, Stealth and Dexterity for Lockpicking and Intelligence and Smithing for Lock Making.DatOneGuy wrote:>Be the best lock/lockpick makerIryn wrote:I could see lockpicking working as a skill only if it works if/when locks are added to houses, but never on gates. Besides, Selling inferior locks so you can break in later with a better lockpicking skill sounds awesome and anyone who pulls it off should be rewarded for it. Rewarded by a group of players with the skills Ranging and Murder, perhaps, but rewarded nonetheless.

They wouldn't be able to pick the superior lock. ;pIryn wrote:Make Lock Making and Lock Picking dependent on separate stats/attributes. And a smart locksmith would never sell superior lockpicks, never.

Or you can become the best blacksmith and make yourself impenetrable armour and irresistible sword and go kill everyone. See any problems with these scenarios?

Which is the reason quality should be less of a timerace. When you have two serious people at the moment, if one starts a month before the other, they'll stay ahead for the most part forever. The increasing LP cost of skill points will eventually make it slow for anyone not in waiting professions (farming, tree planting) as they can get their quality and LP up higher for the need.
If only there was something to counterbalance this to some extent, but I believe that would require another thread. (and someone who will put enough thought into such an idea in the first place)

Except you can't because they're all behind a wall that takes no more than an hour or 2-3 to build (if wall of a large claim, a lot less if you build along a ridge etc.)Potjeh wrote:Or you can become the best blacksmith and make yourself impenetrable armour and irresistible sword and go kill everyone. Everything is limited by wood, which is limited by clay (which is about to get a 20 points bump when bone clay is implemented) water soil and fibres. But fibres (and later on bones) represent such a low aspect of the final quality of the tree that there are severe diminishing returns implemented already.DatOneGuy wrote:If only there was something to counterbalance this to some extent, but I believe that would require another thread. This is not the case however for hilarious items like thanes (hah, thanes, seriously)
edit: VVV pothjeh, I agree, but just let me rant about how palisades are too strong please

No, the point is that you can't get miles ahead of the competition because you depend on quality of resources.

I'd like to see a revamp in the quality of pruducts. I want to see quality based on skill and dedication. Not by someone's stats.Potjeh wrote:No, the point is that you can't get miles ahead of the competition because you depend on quality of resources.
e.g. All crops when planted have the same quality when planted, but if you tend them more often they become higher quality. A bit like how wrought steel is currently made and how it affects end quality. This way a new dedicated player, can make higher quality items than a lazier older player.
The quality of wine and cheese would also depend on dedication, like the quality of them would rise the longer they stay in the barrel or rack, but ofcourse wait too long and you risk it turning into vinegar or generic gouda.
Lockpicking sound good, but to be honest I don't think anyone will feel safe anymore if you can enter without having to break walls down.
