Brodgar client

Post by irongete »

A client forked from the default client and designed with the goal of full customization through a WoW-like LUA addon system.

Client core modifications are kept to a minimum.
A few performance options affecting rendering, camera and underlying systems are built-in, but the goal is to stay as close to the default client as possible. Customization comes by using addons instead.

AddOns website: https://brodgar.io/addons
There are already some available addons, but feel free to create your own and publish it on the website, if u want, to share it with the community, so other players can use it too.
Check out existing addons and the documentation to learn how to create them.
Giving AI context to the client repository, which includes addon documentation, can produce very good results at creating addons.

Been testing the addons for a bit. WASD Movement is crazy. It’s amazing how much the feeling of the game changes with one little change like that. The RTS Camera and Session Manager addons really blew my mind. I’m sure some people will start playing this like it’s some kind of RimWorld. This client has a lot of potential.

This stuff has incredible potential to become next main client of the game, I adore addon design you've chosen.
Only small observation - you probably going to end up having addons bundles, otherwise it requires hours just to configure 50% of QoL features Ender has, I'm not even speaking about advanced clients like Hurricane. Might make sense to bundle them with configuration installed in one go.

Hey, thanks.

Yeah I see your point and you're right. The first run experience its a bit confusing right now. It requires to manually install +10 addons and configuring them one by one.
Client is not shipped with any pre configured addon/s. I'll fix that.

Anyways, the whole idea behind this client is that usually, clients are maintained by a single person, and any implementation is based on their own ideas and criteria, so not all ideas from the community ends up in those clients. Then there are forks from forks and they end up not being maintained.
With this client, anyone can create and share any kind of addon with the features they want, without someone overseeing it.

Just wondering if changes made in https://youtu.be/8GuCkF3Ml2Q is embedded in client without addons?

They adding great features to client, but it feels any day loftar touches anything regarding render distance, skybox, weather or whatever else this all scrables. And if irongete is not around immediately we'll get another dead client.
Wouldn't it be better to move to be addon, so it can be disabled in case of breaking change?

I see addon features as future-proof solution to devs shuffling with private client features in vanilla, something they do rather often

Not criticizing or anyting, absolutely impressed by tectonic shift this clients brings for private clients and only wanted it to be future-proof

What is shown in the video is not in the default client. And its not possible to add it just as an addon as it requires changes in rendering and grid loading.

Your fear about client breaking in the future is right, however, that would also affect the addon system, not just this rendering addition, if the devs changes something, the addon system could break too.

Right now I'm the only maintainer but I'm open to contributions from the community and, if its needed in the future, to have more maintainers in the repository instead of having an endless chain of forks.

I can’t believe how good this client looks.

I literally cannot go back to my old client anymore, even with the missing QoL features. I took these screenshots and I still can’t believe this is not a skybox or some fake background. Those are literally the mountains next to my home.

The feeling of travelling far away to a specific point that you can see from a distance is unmatched. Total game changer. I feel like I’m playing a completely different game.

This game is gorgeous! It’s a shame that, by default, it limits itself so much.
