you don't. just refill it with mulch (not just soil!). if it lacks water, add it. it shows with blue-ish tinge.

anything outside view range. i.e., your view range, which can be toggled in custom clients. it is a square just a bit smaller than minimap grid. same goes for wolf packs in the wild.
