The fact that there is a heated debate about the efficiency in the roman numerical system speaks volumes about the people in this thread.

It's not exactly 'hard' to understand why VIII exists, sure it's not as efficient as possible, but does it really matter?

It probably came about in order, III isn't 'that' long, however IIII was ridiculous, hence why IV came along, VIII was probably to keep with that flow.
(Yes I am aware that III would be the same number of characters when converted to IIV, however the problem is with is in general with the subtraction later down the road, as subtracting 2 only requires 3 characters as opposed to adding 2).

LXXX, XXC for example.

It just happens, it's not like this is a widely used system in everyday life for most people, and it's not like it'll kill you type in one more letter.

What is this shit, xkcd?

just to give relax, i'm only talking, not debating something important, do not worry :3 It was just to let you understand that, out of number logic, this will be uncomfortable for most people used with the normal roman numbers.

That's all, folks. XD

Please convert to the more efficient type of roman numerals and stop wasting precious internet bytes with your wasteful ways, DatOneGuy.

I have no argument with most of this. However, it is sort of like saying that "1" is correct but "1" is not.

yes, is the correct way, simply is inefficent. Bur if Romans used VIII, the correct one is VIII.

So..change and wrong the numbers filling OUR modern logic of efficency, OR use 1-2-3-4 and stop with the problem? If we wanna the Romans number, we must use the Romans one. Not the fake romans IIX that aren't romans but just a mix of modern locig and old signs.

If you have some problem with VIII, then we can use Our modern numers, are quite correct and without this problem. 1,2,3,4 and if we have twelve levels, 12. Better than XII or 24, XXIV or....etc
ok?

What really annoys me is how people have ignored ten hundred and jumped straight to thousand, but then gone back on their orders of magnitude thing and stuck with ten thousand and hundreds of thousands before going to million.

one,two,three,four,five,six,seven,eight,nine,
ten (10),
hundred(100),
tenhundred(10 00),
thousand(1 00 00),
tenthousand(10 00 00),
tenhundredthousand(1 00 00 00),
million(10 00 00 00)
