As vending stands are currently, a lot of people have stopped trading more valuable stuff at Constantinople as they tend to get stolen. And usually stolen by a throwaway theft alt that doesn't even yield proper LP when you summon it.
Some people have taken the stance that theft is too cheap, but I'd go with another alternative. How about second kind of vending stand?
A reinforced vending stand would either have a steel grill or glass display case, requiring the thief to have vandalism to steal from it.
This way we could still have some more valuable stuff traded without having to make thievery unnecessarily difficult.

IMO thief's int*stealth should have to beat the owner's per*exploration, that'd put an end to alt thieves.

But that shouldn't mean you 'can' steal, it should mean you get caught 'tis all. :/Potjeh wrote:IMO thief's int*stealth should have to beat the owner's per*exploration, that'd put an end to alt thieves.
Although I do hate the very little it takes to get black skills. When I started it seemed like a ton, but now that I look at it, it's nothing at all.

Re: Reinforced Vending Stands
i don't think either of those are really a good solution, requiring vandalism only makes the investment take slightly longer, and a second type of vending stand seems kind of like an unnecessary pain in the ass to code. requiring the int*stealth to beat the owners per*exploration... seems too restrictive, i think.
making stolen items summonable as discussed a little bit here viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12552&start=0 might be a viable solution. you still wouldn't get much lp for killing the alt thief but it would presumably make it easier to get the items back.

Re: Reinforced Vending Stands
If you're shoplifting IRL and get caught in the act you sure as hell aren't getting away with any stolen goods, they're going to pat you down and possibly give you a body cavity search if they're feeling extra mean. So I'd say it isn't arbitrary.DatOneGuy wrote:But that shouldn't mean you 'can' steal, it should mean you get caught 'tis all. :/
The fact that you can't get goods out of a high level character's shop in any way is a problem, though. I think the answer is to make stalls drop their goods upon destruction, but give them a decent soak. That way you can always bruteforce it, but you'll have to leave scents with a developed character rather than a throwaway alt.
The problem with summoning items is that they're likely to be processed into other goods, so you can't summon them because they don't exist.

Re: Reinforced Vending Stands
Except we don't have people at the stands, it's a vending stand, not a store, it's not a closed in location where they can restrict exits, it's just a stand with some items on it and a list of what you'd trade for for them to leave in exchange, if they choose to swipe and run, they'll probably get away.Potjeh wrote:If you're shoplifting IRL and get caught in the act you sure as hell aren't getting away with any stolen goods, they're going to pat you down and possibly give you a body cavity search if they're feeling extra mean. The summoning items from hearths sounds like a good start, but it's still a ways to go from proper, safe, vending stands. I'd like a different kind of vending stand that is
1)Mobile (like a cart) - Would be nice, not necessary
2)Stronger - Requires a lot more to BREAK it, like let's say takes metal, has the soak of a strongbox or palisade
3)Harder to steal from - Has some deterrent of sorts, perhaps a simplistic alarm system like a string, and it sets off some sort of 'alarm' people can 'hear' for a minimap or so if someone steals something? Alarm has to be turned off by owner of stand.

Seriously, what's so horrible about the int*stealth restriction? Alarm doesn't do shit for security, you can still use a theft alt and hearth home before anyone can respond, not to mention the fact that as a stall owner you'd have to camp in 'Nople 24/7.

Wasn't going to reply because it feels like I agree with you too often, but this does sound interesting and need someone to counter D1G's realism crap anyways. An alarm, seriously? That's kind of forgetting that stands are an offline mechanic in the first place.Potjeh wrote:IMO thief's int*stealth should have to beat the owner's per*exploration, that'd put an end to alt thieves.

Re: Reinforced Vending Stands
i dunno, i guess because i don't think anyone is going to get 20k int*stealth to be able to steal from me. i DO actually want it to be possible. i DON'T want it to be so ridiculously easy.Potjeh wrote:Seriously, what's so horrible about the int*stealth restriction? Re: Reinforced Vending Stands
The problem isn't with stands, it's with the alts. Throwaway thief alts and alt vaults are a problem for more than just stands. Making stolen items recoverable even from "innocent" inventories seems the best answer. Even though you have to track the stuff down some people live for that kind of thing in this game so it's almost a plus, IMO.
