Increasing stats and hunting capabilities

My friend and I use leather armor shields and stone axes to hunt level 1 beasts for meat, we don't seem to be getting any FEP's. I think we may need to fight stronger animals.

The only way to improve melee fighting is to increase strength and melee fighting skill right?

We have around 30 melee skill each and can not find a way to raise our strength. Any suggestions?

Also can anyone explain the combat system because I see a scale with numbers and little initiative tokens but all we ever do is chop. Any Advice?

You don't NEED higher strength to kill higher level animals. It just makes it easier. You can take down a level 4 bear with a basic 3 damage punch.

Extremely high melee/unarmed skill levels.

It'll keep you from getting hit.

Unarmed skill helps the defensive maneuver "Dodge"
Melee skill helps the defensive maneuver "Shield"

Whether the two work in concert is unknown to me.

Also, most other maneuvers also use unarmed as far as I know.
