I was derping through the wiki today and found this:
"Whenever you see a character in the game view that you have previously memorized, his name will float above his head for a while and slowly fade out (in the color if the group you've put him in). If you want to see it again, just hover your mouse on him.
There is a bandit mask. It will make it take time to memorize its wearer, during which time the memorization aborts if either the memorizer or the memorizee moves. The higher the quality of the mask, the longer the required time is."
What is memorization? How do you do it?
Also, how far should my hearth be from the crime zone if I were to commit a crime and didn't want to have my organs used as streamers in a do-gooders house?
Lastly, so scents wear off and how long does it take?

Re: Memorization and Crime
1. Right click anyone and you'll have an option to memorize. This has a fixed range, and if you are outside it, you'll move up to that range. You'll then know that person as "???" and can give them any name you want. After you memorize them, you will have an option to make them kin and exchange names (similar to using a HS, but without any actually HS involved).
2. It doesn't matter. If you're intent on committing crimes, make sure you hide it. If someone can see you're HF, they can summon you. As far as the scents from crimes go, look up Ranging and Scents on the wiki. All the info on how long scents persist is there.

Re: Memorization and Crime
The distance to your hearth does not really matter if a sufficiently advanced ranger finds your crime. People can teleport all over the map.
And its dumb to commit summonable crimes without a palisade, and risky even then, until you get a brickwall.

This. "Be sure your sins will find you out."
Save yourself a bunch of deaths and finish the brick wall first.

Even if you have a brickwall, you can be tracked down while foraging on the river. If you have scents out, stay alert and carry lots of water...
Actually people will kill you without scents, so whatever, doesn't make much difference.

Re: Memorization and Crime
So people can summon a person that has committed a crime by finding your hearth fire, what if someone broke through my pali onto my claim and found my HF?
Can they summon me then (even though i havent committed any crimes) ?
I hear stories of farmers getting pwned in villages, is this because they were online? Or is it because their HF was found.
Sorry i find the whole HF, scents, summoning etc quite confusing (ye im new but i guess you figured that out already)

If you don't leave scents, you can only be "pwned" if you are online. Although they can break/steal all your stuff, which is worse than death currently anywayVihart wrote:So people can summon a person that has committed a crime by finding your hearth fire, what if someone broke through my pali onto my claim and found my HF?

If they don't have summonable scents of you then you cannot be summoned.Vihart wrote:So people can summon a person that has committed a crime by finding your hearth fire, what if someone broke through my pali onto my claim and found my HF?

It's not too complicated. Have you commit a crime that left scents? If Yes then was it Trespassing or Assault? If No then someone can summon you. Do you have a Hearthfire? If Yes then they can summon you at the hearthfire with the scents. If No then they can summon you anywhere with the scents.
