A Balanced Diet?

Post by Hellkat »

So, trying to figure out a balanced diet to grow all my stats evenly is still a pain to figure out. :?

I've been muddling along for a few weeks, got most of my stats up in the 26-31 range, and I've built myself a nice palisaded compound with a full array of crops and a decent farming skill (42 or so) and cooking (around 30). I'm also capable of sling-hunting boars and bears now from a boat, and my per*exp for finding foragables is currently 1550. However I'm still a hermit, and while there is a well established village nearby who has been giving me a hand now and then, I don't have much to offer them in trade at the moment.

So, how does one go about building up a supply of various stat-building foods and designing a diet so that one stat doesn't get too far ahead of everything else and ruin the FEP balance? Perhaps we can even build up a guide on the subject for budding nooblets? :geek:

Discuss! :D

The first objective is finding out where your intention is with developing your character, what role you will fill. As a hermit, you need to make the decision on whether or not to split up the 2 aspects of the game (combat oriented character and crafting/farming oriented character) onto multiple alts, or if a single all-around jack-of-all-trades type character suits you better.

After that choice you can start to allocate which stats are needed by which character based on their role (if you're doing everything on a single character, keeping the idea of balancing foods in mind).

What all characters need: Intelligence and Perception
Why? Intelligence for curiosities, perception is needed to forage, track, use ranged combat effectively and it can softcap cooking.

Combat characters need Strength, Agility, and Constituion
Why? Strength -> Damage, Agility -> Decreases cooldowns in combat (+less travel weariness fast travelling), Constitution -> Health! (Also swimming)

Crafter characters need Dexterity and possibly Psyche
Why? Dexterity deals with a lot of the softcaps when crafting, and psyche is crucial in silk production

Optional for all roles: Charisma
For everyone: More authority gain with curiosities, and affects the bonuses of a lit bonfire (the charisma of the person who lights it that is)
In combat: Certain moves use the charisma of the party leader to determine bonuses

Now for actual foods:
Phaen made a great post on the topic of how to use food more wisely here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=27243&start=10#p344754
This is a useful link if you need to find foods for the attribute of your choice: http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/FEP_Table#.25_FEPs

If I've overlooked anything just ask and I'll certainly keep in mind making a guide on all the aspects of food :)

Thanks, this is already helping quite a lot! :) The tips about cupboard organization should help a lot, too, though sifting through the big FEP table will take a while. A proper guide would still be most welcome, should you find the time to write one! :D

It's still tricky trying to track down everything I need for a variety of foods, particularly because the only fish I can catch around me is either pike or perch, with a rare roach or brill in with the perch spot; and also because I don't have a meat grinder yet. D:

At this stage of the game, finding Int, Per and Con food is really easy -- just about anything a new chef can create boosts one or the other, filling in the rest is a struggle for me still. I can't grind the meat from my kills to make the most of the STR feps I could be getting, or make deer dogs for Agi - the latter has really been difficult for me to fill in lately. I've been making Rings of Brodgar and Chantrelle & Onion Pirozhkis whenever my wheat grows in, and expanded my wheat fields to try to be able to make more dough each harvest now, just for making those two things to try to catch up my Agi/Dex and even Psy. I'll probably grab my boat and go hunting for mussels now that I can see them all, too.

Later I'll try and make a full post of my hodgepodge 'diet' I've made up so far. xD
