To build a gate, you need two cornerposts with two open tiles between them.
The first standalone cornerpost you build will cost more then subsequent posts, and if you want more than one gate in your palisade, you'll probably need to construct more than one of those standalones - that expense is the real disadvantage of multiple gates (as well as the multiple keys).
