Tracking down scents

I need some infos on how ranging and tracking down criminals work:

What I know so far is:
If someone leaves a scent, that scent can be picked up as an item by a ranger (if he has enough per) and tracked.
The scent's maker can be summoned at his hearthfire when he is logged off, and then executed (if the ranger has rage/murder).
Killing the perpetrator leaves murder scents of the ranger (not sure, think I read it somewhere here).

What I want to know is:
Once you pick up a scent, what then? Does it give you some clue where the criminal's hearthfire is? Does it teleport you there? Teleport his Hearthfire to you?
If the criminal is online, what happens then?
If the criminal's Hearthfire is walled in, can he still be summoned?

I've read that in former times, criminals could also be summoned at the RoB. Now the RoB is gone.

Scents work are like dowsing rods, you have the options track fire or the perpetrator. They have limited uses (depend on how fresh they are, I think top is 9) and delay.

you can summon anyone from a hearth that you can see, regardless if they are behind a wall.

Wait... do you mean I can summon him from any Hearthfire, not just his own?

The fine point here is which you can see.

So the heart being directly behind a wall it's impossible to summon since you can't see it.

So theoretically if I can see the hearth inside the wall, but I can't batter through the wall I might be able to summon a criminal and then use a range weapon to kill him over the wall?

You can summon people from a distance, you dont have to be beside the fire. and actually some people can summon you without being able to see you if your not in a house. i remember reading someone saying one of the russian clients disables trees, buldings, walls etc so you can see people and hearth fires........ not many people would have that ability or know where to get it, or maybe it doesn't even work.

That makes me wonder where to get those russian mods... Dammit, everybody keeps talkin about them being rude trolls, but in the end they're better at programming than our half of the HnH community.
