There are ways to use more XP than you actually have (usually by "borrowing" from the future), making it negative. Not sure I remember all possible ways right now, but one way is to use hearth magic while studying curiosities. Curiosities check your XP when you start studing them but doesn't actually consume it until they finish studying, so using hearth magic in the meantime can cause the curiosities to consume down to negative XP when they finish. Not sure if it would be possible to reach -17k XP doing that, though. Pretty sure there are other similar ways too, however, but I can't seem to remember them right now.

As I said, I'm not sure it was caused by studying specifically, but I do suspect it was caused by actually using this XP in some way. Not sure I can help you find out just how you used it.

I'd have to dig a bit to pull up the last couple of complaints about this. Someone else had ended up in a pretty deep hole, too... around -20k or -30k if memory serves. I don't recall if they ever stated what they had done to get there.

Here's one of the articles: viewtopic.php?f=47&t=52048&start=20&hil ... erience%2A Not sure if that was looked into further or not, or if it was fixed (would have to dig into patch notes).

I seem to recall one other thread on it, but the search terms would be "exp" or "XP" or such, so would have to go to Google on it (can't use terms less than 4 characters with the forum search) and really sift through some number of pages to find it.
