This water doesn't taste quite right today...
How about adding belladonna or foxglove or something to items you can find with exploration, and allow them to be used to poison the wells of your enemies?
As well as an item you can find to cure the poison. Like classic game poison, it could slowly reduce your health over time, or maybe your stamina (especially with foxglove). So that it's not unduly harsh on noobs, it could also be naturally neutralised after a certain amount of time, and/or produce a warning icon that you've been poisoned and what will cure it. Poisoned wells would become healthy again after a day or so, and/or after some sort of purification treatment? The potency of the poison would be affected by the quality of the item used to poison it.

no it should instantly kill you and there should be no cure also it should leach into the water table and poison every well in the supergrid, also the rivers and lakes. of course it would kill all the fish as well.
