A tower you build that has a radius circle like a beehive.
It will have permissions like claims.
Anyone not on the permissions will be shot when in the radius.
You will have to fuel it by putting arrows, or maybe some sort of stone thing into the towers.
Walls right now are just obstacles and not a real defense. This would actually defend against attackers, because they'd be getting pegged by arrows as they sat there trying to destroy the wall.
EDIT: I just realized people would march a bunch of noobs at walls to make towers waste ammo. So instead of firing at anyone not on the permissions, it will fire at anyone not on the permissions committing theft or vandalism crimes within its radius.

they don't talk about exactly what you are suggesting, but are worth a read.
I'd love this idea personally only if the tower is armed by someone.

Re: Watchtowers
Brickbreaker brought some valuable links and here is my comment..
Devs and considerable part of community here hate any kind of NPC-like stuff going around. On other hand, it seems as a total waste of time to suggest anything that is not VERY simple yet groundbreaking. Even if you suggested some passive defense regarding towers, I doubt you would receive any feedback as it is too "complex" or for some other reason yet unknown to me.

Re: Watchtowers
i heard they are intending to implement it,
something like you use it and then you can pan across a much larger screen across the surroundings.
just like when u middle mouse button click and drag in current game screen i presume (exept that you can go so far u dont see ur body anymore?)
