The issue of animal genders is driving me crazy. I've already tamed several cows and sheep, but the cows are always male and the sheep are always female. It's like there's no other gender for them at all.
Is this issue a bug, or does the animal's gender depend on the terrain or the area?

there has been talks of inspecting wild animals. it would be awesome if you could get Q and gender by inspecting a wild animal.

One world my group had like 10 hogs in a row. We speculated that for some awful reason, the gender is determined by where the wild boar spawned, and everyone kept grabbing boars that were close to the base.

If such a hypothesis is true, then in a game that prioritizes time efficiency, this design undoubtedly places immense pressure on new players.
