I'm Back

Post by theTrav »

Hey all,

Just got back from my holiday to a tropical island about 3-4 hours ago, it was awesome.

The guys we were staying in brought back 20 kilogram mai-mai, yellow fin tuna, wahu's every night, baked them in hot coals or made sushimi out of them.

The eclipse itself was possibly the most creepy and simultaneously awesome thing I've ever seen. We went out on a boat to get in the right spot, about 6 hours on really choppy ocean through the night, I got killer sea sick, but it was all worth it for the morning, when the full eclipse happened, and we were in totality for a good 2-3 minutes.

Because the sun was so low in the sky the perspectives made it look MASSIVE, and all the music went off, the water went still, there was a creepy dark brown sort of light, and you could see on the horizon where the edge of the shadow was falling.

I can totally see how primitive cultures made such a big deal about total eclipses now. If you ever get the opportunity to go see one, do it. Being in the totality is infinitely more impressive than in a spot where you can't gaze at the sun with your bare eyes.

Well, unfortunately I don't really do the whole camera thing... Tons of other people (including my girlfriend) did though so I'll post a few of their shots as they come along.

Here's the crew in front of our cabins, the photographer was literally standing in the water for that shot, that's how close to the beach we were

Here's an arty shot of my girlfriend tooling around with a machette (which she had been using for opening up coconuts)

I'll try to get her to upload shots of the eclipse itself but looking at them none of them did it justice, maybe one of the other guys will have captured it better (some people brought some pretty full on camera setups)

Having witnessed a total eclipse on land (but away from civilisation, in the middle of nature) some time ago i can only second: it's amazing.

Additionally to seeing it on the sea: on land the wildlife also shuts up, and the total silence adds to the setting. Really amazing.

So my advice: in case you can make it, make sure you'll be there to experience it next time it happens.

had to share it, that's a photo taken by one of the girls who was on the boat I was on. In real life it looked exactly the same, minus the lense flare to the bottom left
