Why bother with a battle axe? q40 Steel plate only soaks up 450 damage. At full martial, you can break that with a q10 Bronze Sword and a Valor strike. q10 Bronze is just about as terribad as it gets. That or you could just punch him to death and use the piercing damage to KO him.
