To destroy a claim, or to test if you are able, simply walk up to the claim stick, choose 'destroy' from your icons and right click the stick, if the claim has been abandoned for 30 days or more it can be destroyed but it does take a certain amount of strength and stamina. Someone else may be able to be more specific or you can try a search for it as I'm afraid I can't remember from the first time I was able to.
If the claim hasn't been abandoned that many days nothing will happen and your char will just stand there. The only scent you leave is trespassing from original entry, no vandalism scents, and as trespassing isn't a summon-able offense and doesn't last long it's not much to worry about.
Another point - if there are a lot of raided and abandoned places you may be better off just relocating, it may be an unsafe area and in any case it won't give you much space to expand and will also attract passers by who want to look at the ruins.
Good luck, whatever you decide.
I suppose, I'm just not a fan of blunt, asinine responses. And, there used to be a lot more threads devoted to helping when one gets murdered - it might've been in the last world, but when I died, I posted the issues and the murderer would be tracked and brought to justice. So I was hoping more for that. No idea when or why that changed. Also: That's all really interesting... Will take me awhile to get back to the point where I'd be able to even consider destroying claims, but as I said, now that I know it seems like it'll be a much safer method of going about things.

Haha, that is exactly what I was thinking - there are very few active villages in that grid, and tons of raided and abandoned ones, it was also home to three other raiding groups, one of which is still semi active.
Well, I /wanted/ to leave a week ago. But got peer pressured by my neighbors into staying. Which is nice, I like having neighbors who aren't murderous jerks. But I definitely wish I hadn't stayed in the first place. Bleh.
