New Player and Initial Thoughts

Postby RedDress » Tue Jun 23, 2015 11:44 pm

Hey there, I just started H&H not more than an hour ago. I've never heard of it until a friend showed me a link to your webpage. I decided to check it out since my favorite MMORPG was Runescape (which I played with many of my friend when I was a young teen.)

I've always enjoyed adventure games where there is little to no restrictions on where and what you can do in terms of skillset. The main reason why I wanted to check out this game was because it sorta' reminded me of the freeness of Runescape (I guess nostalgia grasped me a bit more than I would have anticipated.) The idea is novel and the discovery experience is a great touch too. It gives incentive to explore and learn more about the world around you. The main thing I've always enjoyed in MMORPGs is exploring and fishing (when I got minecraft 90% of my time was fishing, don't ask me why. I just like fishing in RPGs.)

The first thing that came to mind when I started was:

"What the hell is any of this? Name? Hearth Secret? What's that? What? Oh! I'm a guy now, not a floating ball o- Aaaaaaand now I'm a female. Oh! Guy again. Chest? Clothing! Where is my inventory'? Where is the menus? Okay, up the ladder!"

There was a lot to learn already and I had to check the website again to explain it. Note: It still hasn't explained a lot of my questions. I know this game is not fully complete, but if there is one thing that needs to be worked upon is making the UI and starting phases of the game seemlessly easy to navigate and understand. Again, I realize this game isn't complete yet, but god I must have spent an hour and a half trying to figure out the start of it all. BIGGEST COMPLAINT SO FAR: Who designed the text for in game messages to be red when most of the terrain is green? I am moderately red-green colorblind and even though the message shows in the chatbox, by god is that annoying? Bright yellow or white text, please.

I also was very confused of the skills, the beliefs, and the attributes. I still am on the "belief" system. Also, why can't I fish? I made a fishing pole, I put it on my character, so why is it telling me I haven't "Fully Equipped" it? It is little things like that which frustrates the hell out of new players.

These are my initial thoughts, I'll write down more later.

It is true that the game isn't noob- friendly. If you are new and alone, you will have to use the wiki http://havenandhearth.wikia.com/wiki/Ha ... earth_Wiki a lot. You also might want to find a village to join.

Someone else was asking about a client that can assist with colorblindness, Apoc Lite apparently has features that will help with it.
RustyBuckitt wrote:Xcom's Apoc Lite allows you to see an estimate of the %damage, the %of things (like water in a cauldron, fodder in a trough, or health of an animal), and also allows you to change the color of hit-boxes for plants and other (trees, walls, boats).

As a bonus, it also shrinks down walls and cabinets for easy access, and makes sounds for unknown players, "Red" Players, Trolls, Special currios (floatsam, bluebells, and pearls), and Bears.

The How-to guide explains the basics of controls, character creation, belief system, and lots of other essentials.

Fishing requires not just a fishing rod but a line, hook, and bait/lure. A line can be made out of any string (http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/String). Bait and lures will range from wooden fish to earthworms.

As a heads up, this version of the game is about 5-years out of date. The latest build is being released in 2 months.

its been quite a while since i last read something modest from new players in this part of the forums! (welcome to haven!)

1. have you read "How-To" thread yet? and this list of guides?

2. i think you can find most of the answers to your questions in rob wiki, but if you find yourself stuck, you can ask in this simple question thread(id recommend you to read the first post, but dont expect you to read all 800 pages, just simply ask if you cant find what youre looking for).

3. make sure you have a full set of fishing equipments, which is string, hook, and bait/lure.

*edit* awwww i was late typing!

Don't use that wiki. It's wrong about most things and isn't maintained by the community. http://www.ringofbrodgar.com/wiki is the proper wiki.
Also feel free to ask the community for help in the How Do I? section of the forum. Most people are happy to help you figure things out.

forgotten to mention, but loftar (dev/programmer) hates making ui and we dont expect much, ive seen even jorb (dev/guru) mentioning himself using ender client when he plays!, but hopefully hes making something user-friendlier with the coming august 21st "external beta" release. *winks at loftar*

but, someone would still create custom clients to make it more user-friendly anyways because loftar has certain aesthetics on his "authentic" client. ¦]

I suggest you start with Sevenless' Guide for Beginning Players: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=19114

It summarizes things pretty well.
