Item Locking + ALT for Detailed Item Tooltips

Post by Axatros »

I’d like to suggest a small but very useful quality-of-life feature related to item tooltips and inventory managment in Haven & Hearth.

1. Hovering over an item in the inventory, holding the ALT key could display additional, more detailed information about that item

Currently, item tooltips are quite minimal and often show only basic info. More detailed or hidden mechanics usually require external knowledge or wiki usage.

How it would work:

Hover over an item → current tooltip (basic info)

Hover over an item + hold ALT → extended tooltip with detailed stats and mechanics or flavor text

This keeps the UI clean while still allowing players to access deeper information when needed.

Here's and example from DOTA 2:

Holding ALT while hovering over items or abilities in DOTA 2 usually reveals exact values, scaling details, additional mechanics and explanations

Possible information shown in Haven & Hearth

Depending on the item type, ALT tooltip could include:
  • exact stat values and modifiers
  • quality influence details
  • durability and wear rates
  • crafting-related information (this could be shown when hovering + ALT over item crafting icon in crafting menu)
  • softcaps / hardcaps (if applicable)
  • any non-obvious or hidden mechanics
  • lore/flavor text

2. Item locking / “favorite” system (Terraria-style)

In Terraria, simply hovering over an item already shows very detailed information without extra input, including modifiers and exact stats (in HnH it should be only working when holding ALT tho).

Another related quality-of-life feature would be an item locking (favorite) mechanic, inspired by Terraria.

How it would work

Player can lock / favorite an item in inventory (BY HOLDING ALT AND CLICKING THE ITEM)

Locked items:
  • cannot be moved automatically
  • stay in the same inventory slot
are ignored by actions like:
  • quick stack
  • transfer all
  • mass item movement via scroll / shortcuts
Why this would be useful:
  • Prevents important tools, gear, or containers from being accidentally moved
  • Makes inventory management faster and safer
  • Especially useful during crafting, farming, or base organization
  • Already a well-tested and intuitive solution in Terraria
Why these features matter:
  • Better accessibility for new players
  • Less reliance on external wikis
  • Cleaner UI with optional advanced details
  • Faster and safer inventory management
  • Proven mechanics successfully used in other games

Overall, these would be relatively small changes with a big positive impact on usability and player experience.

So guys, that's it?
I don't see enough movement. Isn't that like a "must be and super easy to implement idea"?

Jorb and Loftar, please consider

Well well well, when you throw items in your backpack do they automatically snap to it's place? No you have to manually move them, it's part of life right?

What?
But the idea is that your character does not touch certain ALT clicked items.

Good suggestion.

1. Additional information when pressing alt. +-
+ Yes, this is a convenient way to separate the information in tooltips so the window isn't too large and cluttered with "unnecessary" information.
+- I don't know what "hidden" mechanics or additional information these tooltips should contain. So perhaps this will be useful to me. But at the same time, in some cases I don't want to receive these hints—it's more interesting to figure things out myself by trial and error. Alternatively, for everyone's benefit, make this feature optional/disableable.
+ It would be nice to see which unlocked recipes the player can used a given item.
+- I don't like consulting the wiki for hints, but it's pretty well done, and finding information is easy if you want to. So, this functionality doesn't seem absolutely necessary. However, I agree that the less reliance on external resources, the better.

2. Item locking/favorites system. ++
+ The author used Terraria as an example, but I'll use 7d2d – the ability to lock specific inventory slots and containers makes them more convenient to use. Favorite items don't move from their places or mix with others. They're always in their place.
+ Selected items are not used for crafting or building. This prevents you from accidentally losing a needed item and eliminates the need to place it to another place before building or crafting.

The inventory contains both currently used items and items you've picked up. I'd like the currently used items to remain in their slots when sorting my inventory.
I have separate cabinets for each food stat, and they contain food samples. They can also contain the ingredients needed to craft them. I'd like them to stay separate, so the samples are always in the same place.
Or a cabinet for curiosities. They're arranged in a specific order based on weight and usefulness. But I can also toss in the curiosities I use.
Of course, separate cabinets for samples and currently used items are possible, but sometimes that's inconvenient, or there simply isn't enough cabinet space. This sorting option would significantly improve the order in my cabinets.
My english is bEd.
