I wouldn't want to lose HnH as it is, but yeah, actually, same system, with zombie hoards would be pretty damn cool now that you mention it, I approve of the idea. maybe a Halloween special? dev spawned zombie hoard? this needs considered...

or build a pally square, and use alts to lead trolls into it, when you get about 5 put a noob who thinks they are giant frogs to go inside with them...that would be more bloody than any zombie invasion

If any of you have played urban dead or die2night, zombie survival is pretty tight. Scavenging through out the day and hunkering down at night. The game get's pretty boring without any action and it could help solve permanent death also. If you get infected by a zombie and die, you don't have to remake a character but you instead become a zombie trying to kill other hearth lings. Zombie games are indeed pretty overdone now but zombie survival is actually pretty fun and challenging.

I've played D2N, fun game, really.
Either way, regarding the OP? No. Just No. Not fitting for the time period, or the genre.

time period? Zombies are just restricted to modern times, it would even be harder in middle age era (bows and swords). Also not sure what you mean by genre, H&H is a survival game against the elements and other heath lings, why not just add zombies into the mix.

Why would it be harder? The only advantages a zombie has is numbers.
Modern era combat tactics relies much less on body armor than it did during medivial times because modern era weaponry renders most types of protection pretty moot.
Sure, some outlying farmsteads would probably snuff it to the shambling horde, unless they left for the more fortified towns at a brisk walking pace. But once the zombies come up against the full-plate wearing axe wielding actual soldiers, whose brains I might add, are safe and secure under expensive steel helmets, the battle becomes rather onesided.

Unless the zombies just man up and mine for ores to make weapons and armor for themselves to put them on a more even footing, but they'd still fail because their rotting bodies would be unable to process anything that isn't raw meat or other hearthlings and thus they'd not gain any significant FEP or increase their stats and equipment quality would suffer as a result.

So now we have two major factions, the living, bored and huddling in their fortified towns because spawning in the wilderness = suicide and the unliving, who probably do the same, except they suck so badly because of gimped stats so they have even bigger walls and no significant farming going on. The only reason they've not lost the war completely is because nobody can be arsed to wipe them out completely since what would the point be. You don't get LP from killing stuff anymore.

Overall it'd be good mixer-upper for a little while early on, like world 4 was, but once everyone is settled in it just becomes business as usual, except much more boring since nobody can go exploring anymore because of the gorram zombie threat. Good job there, sport.

As for not fitting the theme or time period, allow me to point out that zombies have never existed, in any time period, in the history of man, outside some types of fungi and specialized insects. I also direct you to this little article here...

In summary: I don't like this idea. If you want action so badly build a army and assault someones village. Just takes some effort.

^^^ this or... keep an alt online while someone mines on the bottom layer, then leads all the trolls to a pally box, once you have a few, enter warrior, begin cagefight.

It would be interesting to test whether a zombie plague could actually wipe out their apex predator. I'm sorta doubtful myself.
