Some good ideas there, but I have a bone to pick with this one. Instead of 'rich' or 'royalty', maybe you should just say 'literate'. Maybe it is safe to say that all hearthlings are literate since they can create runestones and parchment to leave notes on? Carrier pigeons and ravens are easy to care for. The big issue is transporting the birds back and forth so they're ready to deliver messages to the point they were abandoned for couriers. (Courier systems were pretty common by the time of the Renaissance.)
