Having now tried using shadows as a queue, I have realized shadows don't work for this purpose in caves, or probably at night either.

Meh, marginal. Just use the home button to reset the view.

top of minimap is always north, minimap never rotates.

Was in in age of empires? ... i cant remember.
But in a game i played they had if you dubble click with the mouse scroll it turns the camera to a default position, like north.
That would be enough?

I think pressing "home" sounds like enough. Imo. I didn't know the home key did that.
